A trio of new luxury and lifestyle hotels is slated to reshape Calgary’s downtown skyline and hospitality offerings as Truman and Marriott International announce the arrival of W Calgary, JW Marriott Calgary, and an Autograph Collection hotel on Stampede Park.

The developments are part of a major mixed-use project from Calgary-based partners Truman and Louson. Scheduled to open in phases between 2028 and 2030, the three properties are expected to deliver more than 700 hotel rooms and 360 branded residences in the city’s Culture + Entertainment District (C+E), backed by $1.47 billion in private investment.

“Truman and Louson, as Calgary-based and family-owned companies, have a deep commitment to this city, and we believe this project will be a significant catalyst for the local economy,” says Tony Trutina, chief operating officer of Truman, in a release. “Beyond creating numerous construction jobs, these hotels are expected to generate substantial long-term employment opportunities, boost tourism, and support local businesses through increased visitor spending.”

A new luxury corridor for Calgary

Located at 15th Avenue and Macleod Trail S.E., the 69-storey W Calgary and 62-storey JW Marriott Calgary towers will stand among the tallest residential structures in Western Canada.

W Calgary will include 157 guestrooms, 27 suites, and 239 branded residences, and feature the brand’s signature AWAY Spa, rooftop bar, FIT studio, and 16,259 square feet of meeting space. The JW Marriott Calgary will comprise 248 guestrooms and 120 branded residences, with amenities including 32,500 square feet of meeting space, an indoor and outdoor pool, the JW Garden, JW Market, and a curated retail area.

Paul Cahill, chief operating officer, Canada, Marriott International, says the partnership is aimed at meeting evolving travel expectations: “W Calgary, JW Marriott Calgary, and the Autograph Collection Hotel are poised to usher in an unparalleled level of hospitality to this high-energy city,” he says. “We are thrilled to closely collaborate with Truman and Louson, whose combined passion and love for Calgary will be a perfect complement to the elevated service that guests have come to expect from the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio.”

Autograph Collection hotel set for Stampede Park

Truman is also partnering with Calgary Stampede on a full-service Autograph Collection hotel planned for Stampede Park. Designed to reflect the brand’s “Exactly Like Nothing Else” positioning, the 320-room hotel will include 15,000 square feet of meeting and event space, multiple restaurants and bars, a rooftop lounge with views of downtown, and extensive indoor-outdoor wellness amenities.

Joel Cowley, CEO of the Calgary Stampede, says the development will strengthen the city’s competitive edge as a destination for large-scale events. “With the growing demand for meetings and conventions at the expanded BMO Centre and across Calgary, these three hotel offerings dramatically elevate our competitive advantage as a host city and complement the Calgary Stampede’s world-known exceptional Western hospitality."

Economic impact and district vision

Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), which is leading the redevelopment of the Rivers District, has framed these projects as key pieces of the master plan.

“Our shared vision for the Culture + Entertainment District as a vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhood is coming to life, with more than $2B in city-building infrastructure and cultural destinations completed or underway,” says Kate Thompson, CMLC’s president and CEO. “As we knew it would, our city’s public investment in the C+E is now attracting significant private interest and investment.”

According to a preliminary economic assessment provided by Truman, the combined developments are expected to support more than 9,100 construction jobs and over 2,000 ongoing positions in hotel operations and the tourism sector. The company projects the development will contribute over $120 million in GDP annually from hotel operations, another $111 million from visitor spending, and generate approximately $76 million in government revenues.

With Calgary’s hospitality sector continuing to expand in support of major venues such as the BMO Centre and the upcoming Scotia Place event centre, these new properties are positioned to serve a growing demand for upscale accommodation and experience-driven travel.

The three hotels will mark a significant addition to Marriott International’s presence in Alberta and further anchor Calgary’s transformation into a hub for culture, tourism and global events.
