Riu opens first Canadian hotel with Riu Plaza Toronto

Riu Hotels & Resorts has launched its first property in Canada with the opening of Riu Plaza Toronto, according to a release by TUI Group.

The new four-star hotel is situated in Toronto’s Entertainment District. It occupies 23 floors of a 49-storey twin-tower complex. One of the towers also includes residential space.

Design, amenities and positioning

The building’s facade juxtaposes historic and modern elements: a brick base that complements neighbouring 18th-century structures and a glass upper section for a contemporary look. Internally, the hotel’s lobby and communal areas combine light and dark tones, matte chrome finishes and beige accents to create a relaxed but modern ambience.

Riu Plaza Toronto has 352 guest rooms. Its amenities include:

A lobby bar open throughout the day

A second-floor restaurant offering a signature full buffet breakfast included in room rates

A 24-hour fitness centre

A conference room with capacity for up to 40 people.

The hotel’s address—30 Widmer Street—places it within walking distance of key Toronto attractions including the Princess of Wales Theatre, David Pecaut Square, Rogers Centre and the CN Tower.  It also benefits from strong transit connectivity.

Sustainability and brand expansion

In line with Riu’s sustainability goals under its “Proudly Committed” strategy, the hotel incorporates energy-efficiency systems such as cogeneration to produce electricity and heat simultaneously, water-saving measures, and waste reduction schemes.

This launch marks Riu’s entry into Canada, a market seen as strategically important given the brand’s popularity with Canadian travellers in its existing destinations like the Caribbean and Mexico. Riu Plaza Toronto becomes the twelfth property in the Riu Plaza urban line, joining hotels in cities such as New York, London, Berlin, Madrid, Chicago and others.
