The Coast Capri Hotel in Kelowna has become the city's first accommodation to achieve Biosphere certification through the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI). This certification aligns with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscoring the hotel's dedication to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.
Biosphere certification is an internationally recognized sustainability credential granted by the RTI, a non-profit organization established in 1995 with support from UNESCO. The RTI aims to promote sustainable development in tourism by encouraging businesses to adopt responsible practices that balance economic, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects.
To attain this certification, the Coast Capri Hotel implemented over 100 policies, plans, and audits focused on sustainability. Initiatives included using eco-friendly washing machines, installing sensor-operated faucets, and conducting regular maintenance to prevent water leaks. The hotel also replaced incandescent lighting with LEDs, installed HVAC occupancy sensors in guest rooms, and invested in energy-efficient kitchen appliances, as reported by Kelowna Now.
According to Okanagan Edge, the hotel's commitment to sustainability extends to its catering services, which source ingredients from environmentally friendly farms. This approach not only supports local agriculture but also ensures that guests enjoy fresh, responsibly sourced meals.
Coast Capri Hotel's manager, Todd Weitzel, highlights the benefits of the certification, stating that it enhances competitiveness, as certified businesses have been shown to outperform competitors by 11 per cent. He also notes that the certification boosts international visibility, as search engines and booking platforms prioritize sustainable businesses.
The hotel's efforts contribute to the broader sustainability initiatives in the Thompson Okanagan region, which is committed to building a sustainable and responsible tourism industry. The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) facilitates business and community growth that is environmentally, culturally, and economically sustainable, in alignment with the UN's 17 SDGs.
By achieving Biosphere certification, the Coast Capri Hotel sets a precedent for other establishments in Kelowna, demonstrating that integrating sustainable practices is both feasible and beneficial. This accomplishment reflects a growing trend in the hospitality industry toward embracing sustainability to meet the expectations of environmentally conscious travellers.
