Canada hotels record first occupancy decline in three months
After three consecutive months of year-over-year increases, Canada’s hotel industry recorded a decline in occupancy, according to CoStar’s July 2024 data.

One of Ontario’s newest lakeside boutique motels, Southampton’s The Beach Motel, is hoping to maintain the momentum of its sold-out first summer.
The 17-suite motel on the shores of Lake Huron is inviting visitors to indulge in a beachside winter getaway with four exclusive packages, new winter amenities, and a new seasonal menu at The SandBar restaurant.
The Beach Motel has created four exclusive packages to entice winter travellers:
- Dine and Dream package: A custom 3-course chef-led plant-forward dinner experience for two featuring locally-sourced ingredients and wine pairings at The SandBar, the motel’s beachy, sun-filled, on-site restaurant. One-night accommodation for two included.
- Warm & Bubbly package: An 80-minute ultimate aromatherapy experience at The Spahhh, dinner for two at The SandBar, plus champagne, two Beach Motel chocolate bars and a signature snack consisting of mixed nuts, popcorn and seeds delivered to the room as a “Netflix nightcap.” One-night accommodation for two included.
- Sips, S’mores, Sauna package: A private retreat in the motel’s new outdoor red cedar barrel sauna, followed by a selection of boozy coffees and a delicious S’mores platter around one of its natural gas fire bowls or wood-burning fireplace. One-night accommodation for two included.
- A Stay & Play package: Experience the secrets of Hamptons North! Take a “guess where” trip around Southampton following our curated surprise instructions on where to go and when. End with a curated dinner for two at The SandBar restaurant. One-night accommodation for two included.
- Additional winter offerings and events include:
- Friday Date Nights at SandBar: The SandBar will implement ‘Date Night’ on Fridays with a custom 3-course prix-fixe menu (changing weekly) and half-price bottles of wine
- Spend the Holidays in Southampton: Led by hometown chef, Erin Scholz, The SandBar will create a feature 3-course prix-fixe menu to be enjoyed between Christmas and New Year’s Eve
- New Year’s at the Beach: Guests will be invited to gather in the lounge as canapes are served with a full beverage menu available for purchase. Cocktails & canapes from 6 pm – 9 pm.
