BASIN Glacial Waters set to open at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise this September

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise will open its new thermal wellness facility, BASIN Glacial Waters, on Sept. 15, 2025. The indoor-outdoor space, located within Banff National Park, will initially be open exclusively to hotel guests. Reservations are reportedly already being taken.

Part of a $130-million redevelopment of the historic property, BASIN has been in development for more than two decades. The concept was led by Italian architect Matteo Thun, whose design draws from Nordic sauna culture and the natural characteristics of glacial water. The structure is situated at 1,600 metres above sea level and overlooks Victoria Glacier, which serves as the source for the facility’s mineral-rich waters.

“Capturing the spirit of Lake Louise is at the heart of the architectural intention,” says Thun. “Nature and the beautiful surroundings of the lake and the forest become the protagonist – architecture and interior the stage.”

The facility includes Finnish and bio saunas, a steam room, hot stone massage room, Himalayan salt relaxation space and various temperature-controlled pools. These include a reflexology pool, Kneipp walk and an outdoor infinity pool. Wet treatment rooms are also featured, one of which is modelled after a traditional Hammam.

Guests may also follow one of five optional self-guided “Trails” aimed at different wellness outcomes. One sequence, the Stillness Trail, is designed to help regulate the nervous system. Another, the Presence Trail, aims to support circadian reset and mental grounding.

The facility includes the Glacier Lounge, an indoor communal space offering light food and beverage service. A signature offering at BASIN will be the Aufguss ceremony, which follows European sauna traditions. A rotation of trained sauna practitioners will lead small-group sessions using oil-infused steam.

Emma Darby, global vice-president of spa and wellness at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, says BASIN represents an evolution in the brand’s approach to health and wellbeing.

“Wellness at Fairmont has always been about creating meaningful experiences, and now, BASIN represents an evolution of this,” says Darby. “Our vision with this concept is to create an all-sensory space that feels both intentional and immersive, where guests can slow down, take a breath, and feel genuinely restored.”

She says the project is designed to be open-ended in nature, allowing guests to move through the space in their own sequence and pace, with a focus on reflection and connection to the landscape.

Tracy Lowe, general manager at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, says the facility marks a major turning point in the resort’s development.

“Set to become a sought-after wellness destination in its own right, BASIN’s debut signifies the completion of a transformative investment across the property,” says Lowe. “It truly is a remarkable milestone year for our heritage hotel that has graced the shores of Lake Louise for over a century.”

The facility is set to operate year-round. Seasonal outdoor programming will be available, including guided forest bathing, silent walking meditations and cold plunges in Lake Louise. The BASIN Signature Retreat package, which includes facility access and a tasting in the Glacier Lounge, will launch alongside the opening.

Access for non-hotel guests is expected to be introduced at a later date.
